When Should You See an Orthopaedic Surgeon? 7 Warning Signs to Watch For

Many patients in Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali live with joint pain for months — or even years — before finally visiting an orthopaedic surgeon. The most common reason? They are not sure whether their problem is serious enough to warrant a specialist visit. As an orthopaedic surgeon trained at PGIMER Chandigarh, I want to remove that uncertainty. Here are 7 clear warning signs that mean it is time to book an appointment with a bone doctor or ortho doctor.

1. Pain That Does Not Improve After 2 Weeks

Minor aches and sprains usually improve within a few days of rest, ice, and gentle movement. If joint or bone pain has persisted for more than two weeks despite basic home treatment, this is a clear sign to see a specialist. Chronic pain that is left untreated often progresses and becomes harder to manage.

2. You Heard or Felt a "Pop" During Injury

A sudden "pop", snap, or crack at the time of a fall, twist, or impact is a classic warning sign of a ligament tear — most commonly an ACL tear in the knee. These injuries require prompt evaluation, as delayed treatment can result in further joint damage and instability.

3. Significant Swelling Around a Joint

Swelling that develops rapidly after an injury, or chronic swelling that comes and goes, suggests significant internal joint damage — including ligament tears, meniscus injuries, or early arthritis. Swollen joints should always be evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon.

4. Difficulty Performing Everyday Activities

If joint or bone pain is limiting your ability to walk, climb stairs, get dressed, or carry out normal daily routines, this significantly impacts your quality of life and needs proper assessment. You should not have to adapt your life around musculoskeletal pain.

5. Your Joint Gives Way or Feels Unstable

A feeling that your knee, ankle, or shoulder "gives out" or feels unstable — especially during activity — points to ligament or cartilage damage. Instability left untreated leads to progressive joint deterioration and an increased risk of falls.

6. Pain That Wakes You at Night or Occurs at Rest

Pain during activity is common with many musculoskeletal conditions. Pain that is present at rest or wakes you from sleep is more serious and can indicate advanced arthritis, a stress fracture, infection, or — in rare cases — a bone tumour. Always report night pain to a doctor.

7. A Visible Deformity or Restricted Range of Motion

If a joint looks different from its normal appearance — angulated, swollen, or misaligned — after an injury, seek emergency orthopaedic care immediately. This may indicate a fracture or dislocation. Likewise, a joint that can no longer move through its full range of motion warrants specialist evaluation.

When to Go to Emergency vs Book an Appointment

If any of these signs sound familiar, I encourage you to book a consultation. Early diagnosis and treatment almost always leads to better outcomes — and often avoids the need for surgery altogether.
